Funding and Awards

The School of Arts at Birkbeck often has various sources of funding available to help pay for your MA study. Please see here for the latest information on the bursaries and studentships available for MA Victorian Studies students.
Birkbeck is a member of the CHASE Doctoral Training Partnership, which offers a number of highly competitive Studentships each year. If you have an idea for a research project on any aspect of the long nineteenth century, and wish to apply for one of these awards, it’s important to contact a potential supervisor as soon as possible, to begin the process of discussing and refining your proposal.
The Margaret Elise Harkness prize is an annual award made by the Birkbeck Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies in recognition of outstanding postgraduate work on a Nineteenth-Century woman associated with the arts, social/political activism, or global travel and writing in long nineteenth century. The prize was established in 2018 to honour the work of the writer and activist Margaret E. Harkness (1854-1923). The amount of the award is £1000.

Eligibility: This prize is open to students enrolled in PhD programmes in the School of Arts at Birkbeck.
